Sugar and Spice and Everything Nice

When I was a little girl I was told stories that had happy ever after endings, about beautiful princesses, and that little girls were made of sugar and spice.  It is still going on today.  It is the beginning of setting girls up to believe ideas that will hurt them when they are older.  How many of us have the happily ever after working for us?  Life is hard work and a prince does not come and make everything better for the rest of our life.  Marriage is hard work and there are not many princes out there.  Little girls can pretend to be a princess (special), but what are we telling them when we tell them the importance of be beautiful on the outside.  We need to teach beauty on the inside.  Let little girls be made of puppy dog tail as well as spice.  They do not need to be called a tom boy, but just a happy child.  A boy can be sugar and spice and play with a stove and pretend to be a baker.  We do not need to make the gender rolls any stronger than they are already.  Society has set up certain stereotypes which hurt our kids self esteem and does not allow them to be who they are.  Let’s raise great girl athlete and boys that help around the house.  We need to teach little girls they are good at math and science and little boys parenting skills.  It is time for some simple changes in our story telling to allow our kids to be just great kids.

Be happy and God bless you and yours.
